This an amazing and very simple recipe is perfect for winter. It's quick to make, and while it's baking in the oven, your house will fill with the smell of cinnamon and apples - divine! This dessert is a total crowd-pleaser for the whole family, but is also a nice option if you want to make dessert just for one. They taste incredible heated up for breakfast too!
Ingredients
- Three apples (any apples - although we prefer Granny Smiths)
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- Zest of 1 orange
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 cup walnuts
- 1/2 cup sliced almonds
- 150 g butter
- 1 cup boiling water
Method
Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees. Slice the apples in half, and use a teaspoon to scoop out the cores so that there is a well in the centre of the apple. Place these apples with the centre facing up in a baking dish.
In a mixing bowl, combine the oats, brown sugar, orange zest and cinnamon. Take a spoon and pack the mixture into the holes in the apples. Fill them up as much as you can!
Next, take a knob of butter and place it on top of the mixture on each apple. Take the cup of boiling water and pour into the base of the oven dish, then place the whole thing in the oven and bake for 35 minutes or until the apples are soft.
While the apples are baking, toast the almonds and walnuts in a hot frying pan (no need for oil). Move them about constantly so that they don't burn. Once the apples are ready, serve them with some yoghurt and sprinkle the nuts on top.
