Commonsense Donations - Causes we loved in 2018

19 December 2018

Commonsense is founded on values of organics, environment and community. We're proud that every year, at least 10% of our profit goes to supporting initiatives that share our values. We're the primary sponsor of Porirua School Gardens, and our Store Managers also support one-off and regular initiatives at their discretion. Read on to find out more about the causes we love in 2018!

Porirua School Gardens

We're proud to have supported Porirua School Gardens for the last four years. We cover most of the costs of the scheme, including the coordinator's salary and the cost of resources and equipment.  Alicia works with teachers and kids to start and maintain the gardens. She also works with volunteers and builds up the pools of volunteers at each school!

The Porirua School Garden Scheme works with five decile one schools:

Alicia and the Porirua School Gardens Scheme are always looking for new volunteers. If you'd like to get your hands dirty, or gift gardening equipment, please contact Alicia on

Each of our stores supports initiatives and events at the Store Manager's discretion.

Wellington City

In 2018, our Wellington City store donated to fundraisers for Inside Out, Otari Montessori and Breaking the Cycle, helped out with Go by Bike Day, a Kids’ Sustainable Fashion Show and a School Eco Fair! They’ve also given vouchers to Round the Bays to help them bring the community together!

From a beach clean-up to a kindergarten raffle to a hamper for a school gala, Kilbirnie gave to the local community in many different ways. Here are just some of the community groups we gave to.

Lower Hutt

In 2018, our Lower Hutt made regular donations to Taita Koha Café and Dyer St Kindergarten, gave a weekly food box to Epuni School, some event support to Alicetown Community Centre and Common Unity

Johnsonville has given regular donations to Kiwi Community Assistance, Food is Free Porirua, Women’s Refuge and helped out with a Youthline fundraiser. Near Christmas time, they also donated several times to Little Sprouts – a charity which gives away free life-changing baby boxes to vulnerable families, containing everything a baby needs at birth.

This year, our Kapiti store supported Raumati South Kindergarten, the Police Managers Guild Trust and gave a hamper to Rabbit Rescue for a fundraiser!

Mt Eden

In 2018, our Mt Eden store supported the Kelmarna Gardens Festival, Women’s Refuge, a Community Garden Day, Boomerang Bags, and more!
