Epically Sustainable: 9 BIG New Year's Resolutions for 2017

29 December 2016

New Year's resolutions: either you love them or you hate them. If you're the former, then we have a challenge for you. From transforming your home to changing up your daily cup of joe, we've come up with nine epically sustainable resolutions that are anything but conventional.

1. Do 'Project 33'

Rethink your clothing consumption in 2017 with this minimalist challenge: wear 33 items or less for 3 months. Find out more about Project 333 here

2. Make your home Zero Waste

This one's not for the faint-hearted: could you take 'reduce, reuse and recycle' so far that you're left with one small container of landfill waste at the end of 2017? Here's how one woman does it.

3. Eat only organic produce

Organic food is grown without using chemicals that may harm people, animals and the soil. It's healthier for us, farmers and our ecosystems. What's more, it's incredibly delicious. Could you commit to eating only organic produce in 2017?

4. Volunteer with a local food initiative

Get your hands dirty in 2017 and commit to volunteering with a local food initiative for the next 12 months.  Find out more about urban agriculture in Wellington here, or take a look at this map showing all the community gardens in Auckland.

5. Use a Mooncup

Did you know that one person will go through approximately 11,000 disposable sanitary products in a lifetime? If you get your period, one resolution could be to start using a Mooncup in 2017.

6. Eat less meat

The supply and consumption of meat is a huge contributor to greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Decrease your emissions (and gain magical powers) by becoming vegetarian, vegan or simply doing Meat Free Mondays for all of 2017.

7. Proclaim yourself a plastic bag free country

Join Italy, China and Bangladesh, and ban plastic bags in your personal nation-state for 2017.

8. Drink only Fairtrade coffee

Could you commit to drinking only certified Fairtrade coffee for the entire gamut of 2017? Whether you're an at-home barista, or a cafe-connoisseur, Wellington has plenty of Fairtrade brews - just look for the certification!

9. Use only cruelty free cosmetics

Choose products that are good for you and good for the earth. Beauty that's more than skin deep!
