Here at Commonsense Organics, we’re passionate about healthy food. What you might not know is that we’re also passionate about beauty products that are good for you and good for the earth.
If you’re looking for some great makeup for the parties, wedding or other seasonal celebrations, look no further! We’ve asked staff member Emily Le Grys for her top makeup picks this Christmas. Not only is Emily the Manager of our Johnsonville Store, she's trained in beauty therapy and worked as the Head Makeup Artist at Mecca Cosmetica in Karrinyup, Perth.
Emily’s passion is sustainable, natural and cruelty-free makeup, and she makes many of her own cosmetic and body care products herself. Here she’s chosen four “something special” products, perfect for summer parties. Our six stores each carry slightly different cosmetic ranges, so please do have a chat with our friendly Health Practitioners for advice or recommendations on alternative products.
1. Karen Murrell Lipsticks $29.99
“Karen Murrell lipsticks are so amazing,” Emily says. “They are 100% natural and have really strong colour pigments. Some natural lipsticks come off really easily, but Karen Murrell has real staying power.”
True Love is a really popular shade of red that will work for both warm and cool complexions. “Some lipsticks are blue-red, some are orange-red,” Emily says. “This one is a mix: it suits both warm and cool complexions.
Dark and nude lipsticks are trending at the moment. Emily’s favourite nude is Cordoron Natural. “I wear it every day of my life!” she says. “It’s a strong nude that will work for most skin tones.” If you’d prefer to go dark, “Scarlet Blaze is a really rich nice maroon.”
2. Ecotools Brush Set $39.99
Looking to take your makeup to the next level? Invest in good tools! The Ecotools Brush Set is completely vegan, made from recycled aluminium and sustainable bamboo.
“It’s really affordable,” Emily says. “It contains all the brushes you need for every day. The only thing that could be missing would be a foundation brush, but if you just use concealer and powder you won’t even need one.”
“It’s also fine to use your fingers for foundation,” she adds. “Just make sure you wash them first!”
3. Sante Lash Extension Eyeliner $60.00
Sante is an affordable German-based cosmetics range that was recently introduced to our Wellington and Johnsonville stores. The Sante Liquid Eyeliner has a very thin brush, allowing you to create a thin graceful line.
And the lash serum? Emily admits she was a bit skeptical that it would help her lashes grow longer. “But I had to eat my words,” she says. “After a couple of weeks, it really worked!”
4. Inika Bronzer $74.00
Inika are a fabulous high-quality range of certified organic cosmetics. Recently, they brought in a new range of baked products, which are easier to use than their existing loose powders. One of these new products is a Baked Mineral Bronzer, perfect for a sun kissed summer look. “It’s not too light, not too dark,” Emily says. “It will suit most skin tones.”
If you’re new to applying bronzer, Emily recommends brushing a little bit anywhere that overhead sunlight would touch you: your forehead, your nose, your cheek bones, “even a little bit on your chin,” Emily says.
Currently this bronzer is only available at our Johnsonville Store, but do have a a chat with our friendly Health Practitioners at other stores for recommendations on alternative products.
5. Living Nature Warm Summer Blush
NZ-based Living Nature's makeup is "so natural, it's safe to eat!" Emily says. "Although it wouldn't taste very nice," she adds. Their Warm Summer Blush is a lighter option than a bronzer, and not as pink as a regular blush.
Emily recommends it for a "really beautiful subtle glow", that will add a touch of summer to your cheeks.
